Project Lifesaver is a program implemented by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office to provide enhanced support and assistance to Escambia County residents who are primary caregivers of individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia disorder. Project Lifesaver also provides support and assistance to families of children with Down syndrome, autism, traumatic brain injuries or cognitive impairments.
These individuals might be prone to wander away from home and become confused or lost. Project Lifesaver allows a proactive response by law enforcement if this happens. This not only saves time and manpower but also gives caregivers and families peace of mind and reassurance that all possible resources are being utilized in the effort to locate and return their loved ones home safely.
A participant in Project Lifesaver wears a special wrist or ankle bracelet equipped with a small transmitter which emits a tracking signal. When the local Project Lifesaver agency receives notification of a missing loved one, a search and rescue team is dispatched to the wanderer's area and begins searching with the mobile locater tracking system.
The average time to locate a missing loved one is 20-30 minutes from the time of deployment. Sheriff's personnel and volunteers are specifically trained to make the loved one feel at ease for a safe return home.
